For the first time in Iran and the fourth time in the world,

A successful head transplant surgery was performed thanks to the efforts of Iranian doctors.

In an unprecedented operation in Iran and rare in the world, on the 25th of August of this year, under the supervision of Dr. Sam Zareyan

Nejad Devani, Head of the Heart Surgery Department of Iran University of Medical Sciences and the Technology and Organ Transplantation Unit, a 28-year-old patient with complete severing of arteries neck and trachea in an unprecedented manner for the first time in the country with the presence of Dr. Zareyan Nejad, Dr. Hosami Moghadam, Dr. Tayibi, Dr. Tizmaghz, Dr. Yazdi and with the direct order of the head of the Iran University of Medical Sciences, Mr. Pazoki, in the operation at Firouzabadi Hospital, Shahr Ray Surgery was performed.

This case was the fourth successful transplant of all neck and tracheal vessels in the world, which was performed in Iran with medical equipment made in Iran, and it is called a head transplant. Similar to this transplant surgery, it has only been performed 3 times in the world and in other countries. It has been reported that in the last head transplant similar to this model, which was carried out in 2021 in the United States, the American patient lost his ability to speak. The special difference between this transplant surgery in Iran and similar cases in other countries is that the person's ability to speak is not impaired. Which  has undergone surgery. And in a way, it is considered the most unique type of head and neck vascular graft in the world.

The timely action of the emergency department of Firouzabadi Hospital in controlling the bleeding and injecting several blood bags in the first stages is considered one of the important factors in saving the life of this patient.

The surgery performed in Iran was achieved with medical equipment manufactured in Iran. The patient's health and the absence of underlying diseases such as blood pressure, diabetes, anemia, etc. increased the success of this surgery.

The success of this operation was the result of team work, in such a way that 2 specialist cardiovascular surgeons, several general surgeons and the anesthesia team. After 6 hours of hard operation, they did such a great job, something rarely seen in the medical field.

This surgery has not been performed before in Iran and even now in many other countries, because most of the patients who are in such conditions die and do not reach the hospital at all, or if they do, they have different conditions. Therefore, from now on, we can hope that even if there are injured people who are worse than this case and have amputations in this area or any other organ, their lives can be saved through transplant surgery and medical equipment manufactured in Iran and the presence of medical teams.
